A Huge Muddle
The thing with Joeâs surname continued to bother Richard. Wasnât it odd to have a different surname than oneâs father?
He met Joe on the way to school. âHi, Richy!â Joe called out to him.
For a moment Richard was taken aback, then he smiled. He liked the sound of the name Richy. But then he realised that Richy Fartson was no better than Richard Fartson.
âI wanted to ask you,â he started, âabout your name.â
âOh, come on!â Joe smirked. âYouâve really got something with names. Is it maybe because your name is Fartson?â
Drat it! Joe must have heard correctly after all. It was odd that he had not laughed himself silly straight away.
âDonât worry about it,â Joe said, âI think itâs cool to have such a funny name.â
âWell, I donât! I would rather be called Different, like you.â
âWell, you know what?â Joe paused a moment before he continued. âWhen people hear that I donât have the same surname as my father, they start asking, why and how come and for what reason. Just like Mr Woodhouse. It really gets on my nerves!â
Richard could well imagine how much it got on Joeâs nerves.
âIâm sorry that I asked you,â he said.
âItâs OK.â Joe nudged him in the ribs. âLet me tell you something, but first you have to promise not to tell anybody.â Richard was really curious. âI promise.â
They sat down on a bench. Joe took a deep breath. âMy mother isnât called Bartels but Different so that she doesnât have a different name to me,â he whispered.
âHuh?â Richard did not understand a word of what he was saying.
â She had me when her surname was Different,â Joe explained. âShe was not married then, thatâs why my surname is the same as her maiden name. She kept her name the same as mine, so that everybody knows that she is my mother.â
Richard said, âOh!â even though he still did not understand completely.
âMy father is really my stepfather,â Joe added. âMy real fatherâs surname is Bird, but I hardly ever see him.â
Richardâs head was spinning. âDifferent, Bartels, Bird,â he counted the names, âthatâs quite a lot of names for just one family.â
It was funny that Joe did not get in a muddle with all of them. Richard did not like it that everybody in his own family was called Fartson, but at least it was simple and clear.
